Status and Appointment

Honorary consuls are often not professional diplomats. They are typically private individuals who carry out consular functions part-time. The sending state appoints them.

Functions

The functions of honorary consuls include supporting the welfare of nationals of the sending state and furthering the development of commercial, economic, cultural, and scientific relations.

Privileges and Immunities

Honorary consuls do not have personal immunities and are not exempt from taxation, unlike career consular officers.This makes their legal exposure similar to that of ordinary citizens.
